OMG, Wax just reloaded the national news and there's an article about a cat named Filliph.

FILLIPH.

These Finns have simply named their cat FILLIPH because they don't understand English pronunciation and think that "ph" is pronounced "p" and the h is decorative.

I went to get my helix piercing redone the other day (back when I had it done in the 90s it was just a 'cartilage piercing', also they still did it with a gun, not a needle), and one of the kids waiting to have their ears pierced had their name spelt out to the front desk staff.

'It's Thea. F-F-H-E-A.'

The other child's name from the same family was Molly, which I assume was spelt Molly because the grandparent didn't feel the need to spell it out.

Okay yeah, Australia DOES have other languages but probably none that commonly spell unexpected sounds with FF. (I was briefly thinking you might be Kiwi, but then I was like, there's someone else I talk to on here with an icon that looks like that and what if she's changed her username and I'm mixing them up? So I had to go check.)

Considering the impenetrable patchwork maze of English pronunciation and spelling -- it's a capsule linguistic history, but it's *not* phonetic -- I can't find it in me to blame anyone for taking an odd h as decorative. Older SF fandom, with "ghod" and "bheer" and "fijagh" gloried in it.

In other news, "grok" is now in Merriam-Webster. Hee.
